With toys, clothes, craft supplies, and books filling their room, it’s easy for a kid’s room to become messy and disorganised. And when you’re busy, tidying up your kid’s room may fall to the bottom of the to-do list. That’s why it’s important to put some organisation in place – so that you’re not clearing out their room every weekend. Here are some essential tips for organising your kid’s bedroom.
Choose furniture with storage
If your kid’s bedroom is small, finding places to store things can be difficult. One of the easiest ways around this is to opt for furniture that doubles up as storage space. For example, there is a selection of toddler beds and kid’s beds out there with drawers underneath that will help you tuck away spare sheets, toys, and clothes. When buying new furniture, always be on the lookout for products that have drawers and cupboards.
Baskets and shelves
Other than storage found in furniture, plenty of baskets and shelves will help you keep your kid’s bedroom organised and tidy. Fill cupboards and shelves with baskets so that you can easily pack away toys. If the space is small, consider hanging baskets or an over door storage rack so objects can stay off the floor. You could even use wire baskets or a spice rack hung on the wall for extra book storage.
Bin and donate what your kid doesn’t want or need
Toys, papers, old books, clothes – these things might all be gathering dust under your kid’s bed. If you want your kid to have an organised, tidy room, you’ll both need to get rid of things your kid no longer wants or needs.
This starts with an open and honest conversation with your child about what they don’t want. They might have toys that were gifted to them last Christmas that they don’t use. Rather than feeling frustrated about wasted money, let your kid throw away things they aren’t using. Toys, books, and clothes that are still in good condition will be a welcome donation to your local charity shop.
If your kids share a room, create space for each of them
Many of us grew up sharing a room with our siblings. If this is the case for your kids, this guide to how to make siblings sharing a room work is a great place to start. As for keeping the space organised, make sure each child has space and storage of their own. This will make it easier for all of you to keep the space tidy and find what you need. It will also give the kids a stronger sense of ownership over their own space and stuff.
Involve your kid
As a parent, there’s only so much you can do to keep your kid’s bedroom organised and clutter-free. If you want to sort out your child’s bedroom, involve them from the start so that they can also play an active role in keeping their bedroom tidy. This means encouraging your kid to tidy up before bed, showing them that every toy or book or blanket has a home in their room, and making tidying a part of your routine.
With a little bit of thought and planning, you can ensure your child’s bedroom stays tidy and organised.
