Make a Dinosaur Habitat Box (with Things You Have at Home)

July 11, 2018 by Rosie 7 Comments

Do you have a dinosaur fan at home? Yes?! I thought so! Here I show you how to inspire your child to make a dinosaur habitat box!

There’s something so fascinating about dinosaurs isn’t there? It’s awe inspiring to think that dinosaurs lived before humans even existed – the mind boggles when you really think about it!

My son is very interested in dinosaurs at the moment. He loves reading about them, building them with legos and creating his own dino worlds.

Dinosaurs can really spark the imaginations of kids of all ages and make a fantastic topic for kids crafts and creative play. Your child will love creating their own little dinosaur world in a box – you can make this with things you already have at home.

This dinosaur habitat box is really easy to make. You only need a few simple materials, which you can find easily in the house or garden – so no panic about complicated materials! The only thing you definitely need is some toy dinosaurs – and I’m sure you have some of those lying about! If not you can pick up some super cheap ones online.

You can use any size box you like – we made a miniature box using a tea bag box. But a larger box, like a shoe box would work really well – and be good for creative play.

The great thing about this activity is that it’s completely open ended. Kids can decorate and make the habitat box however they like, using the materials you have available. I’ve included a list of suggested materials, but feel free to come up with your own!

You could use this activity as a prompt to be dinosaur detectives and find out more about the habitats that dinosaurs lived in.

The best thing? Set your children off making a dinosaur habitat box and they’ll busy themselves for ages – all whilst sparking their imagination and creativity. Hopefully you can grab a cuppa for a few minutes too!

You’ll need:

A small empty box (you can use a box as small as a teabag box, or as large as a shoebox.)

Small toy dinosaurs(at least one, or more if you have them!)

Suggested materials for making the habitat:

Tissue paper (assorted colours, especially green and yellow or brown).

Old magazines

Tin foil, or shiny paper

Dinosaur stickers

Coloured paper

Paint pens or felt pens

Play doh

Scissors

Glue

Anything else that you think they might want to use!

1. Simply lay out all of the materials and the dinosaurs on the table, work space, or tray. If possible put out some dinosaur books or pictures of dinosaurs in their habitats as inspiration.

2. Talk about the types of habitats that dinosaurs lived in. Dinosaurs lived on all continents and so would have lived on many types of terrain, from deserts or savannahs to forests, beaches, and swamps. There’s lots of great facts about dinosaurs over at the Natural History Museum and at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

3. Let children look at the pictures and materials and come up with their own idea for their dinosaur habitat box.

4. Let them get creative and imaginative!!

In our habitat box we used tissue paper to line the box. Then added a background of sky and trees.

We put in some real leaves, stuck down with play doh. Plus some real rocks and a stick to create a log. We had some plastic leaves, so those went in too, plus two small dinosaurs.

Do let me know if you give this idea a try. I’d love to see your creations!

It’s all about dinosaurs in our house at the moment, so keep a look out for more easy dino activities coming your way soon.

This looks great! Dinosaurs are amazing creatures, and really spark children’s imaginations! And it’s great to make a craft that can then facilitate further imaginative play!

And someone liked this idea so much, they added it to the BlogCrush linky for some extra exposure. Congratulations! Feel free to collect your “I’ve been featured” blog badge 🙂 #blogcrush

My daughter needs to do a dinosaur habitat using a shoe box. Not sure how to do it, how to lay the box out and what you put in it etc. I like the idea above is there anything else we could use?
    Please help.

I would place the shoe box on it’s side, so that you can easily see inside. You could also sit the box inside the lid to extend the habitat. Draw or paint a background and place at the back of the box. Then try giving your daughter a mixture of materials and encourage her to come up with ideas to create the habitat in front of the background. You can make tissue paper leaves, foil lakes, play doh volcanoes, trees made with real leaves. I’m sure she’ll have some ideas! Let me know how it turns out!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These easy washi tape hearts are so quick and easy to make - they look really effective too! 😍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've posted a blog post (link in bio) but to be honest these are so simple to make.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•Cut a heart shape from card - you could use an old piece of cereal box.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•Tear pieces of washi tape and create a collage. See what mix of patterns and colours you can make!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•Add a face with a black pen or goggly eyes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
•Write a note on the back for someone special!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you don't have any washi tape you could also use left over pieces of gift wrap and stick on with glue. 🎁
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hello!👋 Rosie here! It’s been a while! How Hello!👋

Rosie here!
It’s been a while! How was your summer? I hope you had a break from routine?

I took a social media break so I could focus on just ‘being’ this summer. It’s been a challenging year for us all and sometimes it’s good to take a step back and focus on what matters. ❤️

I love this photo of me and my gang (we are about to go on a pony trek!) 🐎 It sums up our summer - getting outdoors, trying new things and most of all, spending time together. 🥰

I also wholeheartedly recommend a visit to @pembreycountrypark in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 where this picture was taken. We loved it so much we could have spent much more than a day there!

Did you have a break from routine this summer? What did you get up to?
What can you create with a wooden spoon?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We've had a go at making some wooden spoon people puppets!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These were so fun and easy to make. Your children can use their imagination to create any different characters that they like!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some of the ideas my kids came up with were: mermaids, ladies with pretty dresses and super heroes. Scroll to see some of the finished results!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope your children have as much fun making these wooden spoon people puppets are much as mine did. Once you’ve made your puppets you can go ahead and put on a puppet show!

Stick Fairy! 🧚‍♀️ I put this on my stor Stick Fairy! 🧚‍♀️

I put this on my stories, but then thought was too cute to not share properly! 💚

This wonderful stick fairy idea came from @mothernatured 👏
I made one for the woodland playgroup I co-run and the children loved making their own versions! 💚

I recommend using dry sticks. Use pva glue and leave to dry thoroughly. Some of our group also found tying leaves on with yarn worked really well too!

We love making our own toys from recycled bits and bobs in the house, so decided to have a go at making a Peter Rabbit figure using a toilet roll! ✂️

You can make this Peter Rabbit toilet roll DIY with an empty toilet roll and a few bits and pieces from the craft box.
